Born in New Delhi on 29 April 1959 and educated at Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University, Rajkumari Ratna Singh is an agriculturist by profession and a former three-term Member of Parliament from Pratapgarh. She entered active public life in the early 1990s and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996, 1999 and 2009.

The Royal Legacy of Kalakankar

A place shaped by history, literature and national service.

Set on the banks of the Ganga in Pratapgarh, Kalakankar is more than a family home. Its history intersects with the uprising of 1857, early Indian nationalism, Hindi journalism, literature, diplomacy and post-independence public life.

1857 and Lal Pratap Singh

Lal Pratap Singh of Kalakankar was a leader in the uprising of 1857 and was killed at the Battle of Chanda in 1858. His place in the freedom struggle was later commemorated by the Government of India with a postage stamp.

Raja Rampal Singh & Hindi journalism

Raja Rampal Singh was associated with the early Indian National Congress and established the newspaper Hindustan. Madan Mohan Malaviya moved to Kalakankar in 1887 to edit the paper, an important chapter in the development of modern Hindi journalism.

A literary home

Kalakankar became a recognised cultural centre. Poet Sumitranandan Pant moved there in 1931 and lived in the area for years, drawing deeply from its landscape and intellectual atmosphere.

Gandhian associations

The estate’s twentieth-century history includes connections with the freedom movement and Mahatma Gandhi. Family tradition remembers Kalakankar as a place where nationalist activity, khadi and public service became part of everyday life.

Raja Dinesh Singh

Rajkumari Ratna Singh’s father, Raja Dinesh Singh, represented Pratapgarh in Parliament across several terms and twice served as India’s Minister of External Affairs, alongside other senior Union responsibilities in commerce, industry and water resources.

The Svetlana Alliluyeva connection

Kalakankar also entered Cold War history through Kunwar Brajesh Singh and Svetlana Alliluyeva, daughter of Joseph Stalin. After Brajesh Singh’s death in Moscow, she travelled to India with his ashes and spent time at Kalakankar before her later defection to the United States.

From Kalakankar to national public service

She is the daughter of the late Raja Dinesh Singh and Rani Neelima Kumari. Her father’s long parliamentary and ministerial career placed Kalakankar within the story of post-independence Indian diplomacy and governance. She later married Maharavat Jaisinh Sisodia of Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, and the family continued its tradition of engagement with public, cultural and philanthropic work.

Her children, Bhuvanyu Singh and Tanushree Kumari Singh, have also been associated with family institutions and community initiatives. The Kalakankar Foundation publicly identifies Rajkumari Ratna Singh as Chairperson, Bhuvanyu Singh as Secretary and Tanushree Singh as Treasurer.
